Municipal Solid Waste Treatment and

Landfill Gas Technology

Process Description

Dry Fermentation Technology

AAT&ANKA provides dry continuous fermentation technology for the treatment of municipal solid waste in a big scale. In a first step a sorting plant separates the municipal solid waste in several fractions. The organic fraction is fed to digesters with a volume of 4.000 m³ each. Biogas is produced by the continuous plug flow of the substrate in anaerobic conditions. The slowly running mixer pushes the substrate forward, electric energy consumption is minimized. Digested material is separated and process water is led in a very efficient circle. In the gas line biogas is cleaned and prepared for the usage in CHP units or biomethane upgrading.

The process is easily scaled up by increasing the number of digesters according to the waste volume. Our largest plant so far treats over 3,800 tons per day of municipal solid waste with 11 digesters and has an installed electric power of 18 MW el.

Landfill Rehabilitation and Landfill Gas Technology

Municipal waste landfills are mainly classified as sanitary landfills and non-sanitary dumping areas. Although non-sanitary dumping areas are rare nowadays, it is necessary to take them under control and rehabilitate them. AAT&ANKA provides the expertise to convert non-sanitary dumping areas into sanitary landfills with defined boundaries, where wastes are filled under control with continuous monitoring. Landfill gas coming out because of natural degradation of these wastes is collected by gas collection systems and transferred to energy generation plants.
